Social Workers basically help people but they are not ‘God like’ people. They come from a range of different backgrounds and have many types of personalities. The challenges faced by social workers are no more difficult than those faced by nurses, teachers or police officers.

I remember being in Prague a few years ago and how seeing a dishevelled man begging in the street made me realise that social work would always be a part of my life. There was something in this man’s plight that made me reflect on why I had become a social worker. My conclusion led me to realise that my reasons for becoming one are perhaps no different to thousands of others who have a strong desire to help people sort out their difficulties in order to have a better life. But I believe there lays a challenge in this career, like other careers of good will, that requires a balance of care and assertiveness to help clients improve their conditions in life.

I hope you benefit from this collection of articles that I have selected for you. They will illustrate the complexity of working with troubled human beings that I have come into contact with over the last fifteen years. Here are situations that include mental health issues, personality disorders, childhood abuse, neglect and brutality. These stories do indeed show the darker side of human life.  An unpleasant sight that social workers often see on a regular basis.
