The title formy childhood memoirs proved problematic in the sense that it continuously got changed. First it was called ‘Defining Moments’ but I dropped this after considering it too unoriginal. Then I tried ‘Alone on a Raft’, the raft symbolising my difference, as I felt it, with other people, who themselves are different to me.

But this had lacked sufficient justification. The next title was ‘Something to Write Home About’. A nice simple and unpretentious title but this too was dropped after I discovered that the title has been used before. So at one stage it was a  case of ‘lots to write home about’ but unfortunately in absence of a good title.

The next title to come along was ‘Memories of an Irish Country Boy’. However, someone pointed out to me that this sounded too old fashioned and resembled something like an Edwardian Journal which prompted me to think ‘Bloody hell the 1970s wasn’t that long ago’. This title was immediately dropped without further thought!

I’m wasn’t too bothered about the lack of a definite title and continued writing my story. Then an interesting article caught my eye in The Independent newspaper last year. I discovered Graham Greene often had difficulties in coming up with appropriate titles for his novels. He resolved this by giving his work a temporary title but after it was completed he would assign it a different and definitive title. So it seemed that other writers had this predicament too!

I have now finished my memoirs and am happy with the title that I have chosen which is ‘Buried Deep in my Heart’.

I am so pleased that I have chosen this title because it firmly sums up what the book is all about. My childhood memoirs is primarily about events that are long since forgotten – about places that have completely changed over time – and of people who are either dead or whose lives are so completely different to back then. But for me all these points make up the past – my past – and will live within me forever because they are buried deep within my heart.
